Labor Market Update: Trends You Need to Know as an Employer

11 - 06 - 2025

The Dutch labour market remains tight, although there is some easing. In 2024, the number of jobs grew by 0.8%, and the unemployment rate rose to 3.7%. There are still more vacancies than job seekers – 106 per 100 – but the tension is easing.

The number of unemployment benefits also increased by 9.2%, indicating uncertainty for many workers.

Sectoral differences are large: demand is growing in trade and hospitality, while the temporary employment sector is seeing a slight decline in vacancies.

What does this mean for you as an employer?

It is becoming more important than ever to remain flexible and respond intelligently to personnel needs.

An employment agency can help you with this:

  • Rapidly deployable, reliable employees
  • Foreign Worker Solutions, Including Housing
  • Less administrative burden and more focus on your core business

Tip: How to retain good employees

Retaining employees starts with attention. Here are 5 practical tips:

  • Provide clarity and structure – provide clear work instructions and expectations.
  • Recognize effort and achievement – a compliment or small gesture goes a long way.
  • Offer perspective – for example, opportunities for growth or training.
  • Communicate regularly – keep lines short, show interest.
  • Create a pleasant working atmosphere – employees who feel valued stay longer.
